Mumbai Street Style Masala Pav Recipe

Mumbai is famous for its street food and Masala Pav is one of the famous dishes. Street food is something every Indian love to eat. We can see tapris outside of office and colleges with people enjoying different stuff. There are khau galis (food streets) in every city these days serving lip smacking street food.

I love to eat street food, but I always try to make it at home for hygienic reasons. This way I can eat as much as I want to, without having to worry about health.

How much ever we try to restrict our diet to healthy or clean eating, we always crave for something good to eat. Especially the nap after my lunch makes me most hungry. That’s the time all your diet plans or healthy eating plan goes for a toss. For such times I try simple recipes which are quick to make good to eat. Although I keep most of my meals healthy, but we always have cheat days when we eat spicy, tangy street food or cheesy, creamy pasta, Isn’t it?

How to prepare –

Masala Pav from Mumbai’s and Pune’s street is one of the street foods I cherish most. The spicy, tangy masala prepared with veggies and stuffed in pav (bun). Which is then roasted crisp on a tawa.
I have my own version of preparing it. Instead of stuffing the masala I mix it with crisp bite size pav chunks which makes it easier to enjoy even while travelling. Ever since I started preparing this dish, we carry it in our dabbas while going on for a long train journey. I can keep talking about this but now its time to jump on the recipe.

What kind of Pav/Buns can be used –

Ladi pav (that we have with pav bhaji) or buns (not the burger ones but the smaller version of it) can be used to prepare this recipe. Fresh or even leftovers pav makes a good masala pav.

Mumbai Street Style Masala Pav Recipe

Instructions
Roasting Pav
  1. In a pan heat 2 Tbsp butter. Add pav chunks and cook till crisp. This might take approx. 4-6 minutes. Stir in between to prevent sticking to the bottom.
Preparing Masala
  1. Heat oil and remaining butter. Add finely chopped ginger, garlic and green chillies.
  2. Add finely chopped coriander. Saute for about 2 mins.
  3. Add finely chopped onions and cook till translucent.
  4. Add finely chopped tomato and capsicum. Cover and cook for 4- 5 mins.
  5. Add tomato puree. Mix well. Cook till oil starts to leave sides.
  6. Add salt, Kashmiri red chili powder, pav bhaji masala. Mix well.
  7. Add water as required. Cook till it starts to boil, and all spices comes together.
  8. Add roasted pav chunks. Mix well.
  9. Add coriander leaves. Serve hot.
Recipe Notes

Cook pav on a low flame to get the crispier texture.
More fat (oil and butter) adds makes this dish even tastier
Serve immediately or pav will get soggy.
You can also add red chili powder if you like spicy.
Avoid adding green chilies if preparing this for a kid.
Mash the masala a bit to get smoother consistency.
